About 12 miles north of Chapel Hill and northwest of Durham sits the historic town of Hillsborough. The town is convenient to Research Triangle Park, Duke University, UNC Chapel Hill, and the Raleigh-Durham airport. Although the town is geographically broad, the population is relatively small at about 6,400 residents.

Most of the residents have white-collar jobs. They are professionals, office workers, service providers, and salespeople. Hillsborough is also home to a substantial number of artists and designers. The population is ethnically and culturally diverse.
