The Wooden Nickel- Hillsborough NC by Caroline Culler

About 12 miles north of Chapel Hill and northwest of Durham sits the historic town of Hillsborough. The town is convenient to Research Triangle Park, Duke University, UNC Chapel Hill, and the Raleigh-Durham airport. Although the town is geographically broad, the population is relatively small at about 6,400 residents.

Most of the residents have white-collar jobs. They are professionals, office workers, service providers, and salespeople. Hillsborough is also home to a substantial number of artists and designers. The population is ethnically and culturally diverse.

The town features more than 100 homes and buildings that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The town has many historic sites, and walking and bus tours are available to visitors. There are also Revolutionary War reenactments to excite the visitors.

Downtown Historic Hillsborough NC by Larry Tollen

Hillsborough's vibrant downtown area has a quaint colonial feel to it. Several unique, friendly shops and restaurants are located in the downtown area. From April through September, the downtown area comes alive on the last Friday of each month with music, artistic events, and entertainment, as well as exhibits in the shops and on the sidewalks.

More On Hillsborough Real Estate

Hillsborough real estate is terrifically diverse. Many homes are very charming and retain the character of early colonial times. The red-brick homes look idyllic in the lush green North Carolina foliage. New neighborhoods with more current home styles are expanding quickly as people learn more about Hillsborough and move there.

Lot sizes tend to be a little generous in Hillsborough. There are quite a few homes that are on farms complete with stables for horseback riding. While some homes can be found in the $200,000 price range, other homes range from $500,000 to over $2,000,000. Hillsborough real estate prices used to be much less expensive than those in nearby Chapel Hill; but in the last few years as more buyers have discovered Hillsborough’s charms, prices have risen. In the last half of 2015 the average 3 bedroom 2.5 bath home sold for just under $300,000 and the average price per square foot was $130+/-. Only in the past few years have townhome developments started to be built in Hillsborough and the average 3 bedroom 2.5 bath townhome sold for $220,000+/- with a median price per square foot of $121+/-; all were new construction. Undeveloped land is still readily available and residential acreage has been averaging between $30,000 - $50,000 per acre.
