Over the past decade, the Triangle area has become one of the most popular areas of the country to live and work, and for good reason. A prime geographical location and a robust economy have paved the way for a huge influx of families and individuals relocating from out of state. At some point, most of these people eventually play host to visiting family and friends. Luckily, there’s no shortage of fun and interesting things to do.

Here are a few good ones:

  • Heart of NC Wine Trail: Established in 2011, this wine trail includes five small, unique vineyards. It runs from Durham southwest through Apex and Pittsboro, ending in Siler City.
  • Duke Gardens: The Sarah P. Duke Gardens is free and open every day of the year. This world-renowned public garden was recently named No.4 on the list of the World’s “50 Most Stunning University Gardens and Arboretums.”
  • NC Farmers Markets: The Triangle is serious about eating local, and there is no better place to check out the local selections than the Farmer’s Market. In addition to produce and plants, there are three restaurants (one serving the freshest NC seafood), and specialty shops.
  • UNC Chapel Hill: The Triangle is a hotbed for higher education, and UNC Chapel Hill occupies one of the most beautiful, quintessentially “college” campuses. Browse Franklin Street, visit Morehead Planetarium, and don’t forget the Carolina Basketball Museum.
  • Marbles Kids Museum: If you have young children in your group, a stop at Marbles is a must. The nine themed, ultra-hands on exhibits and IMAX theatre will keep them busy. The on-site Café is a pleasure for kids and adults, serving local, seasonal fare (oh, and craft beer too).
  • Eno River State Park: Less than 15 minutes from downtown Durham, this 4200-acre state park feels like another world. It offers walking, hiking, camping, canoeing, fishing, and more. Educational and special events are held throughout the year.
  • Try some NC barbecue: The great debate rages on, but whether you’re a devotee of Easter-style or Lexington-style (or one of the many non-local types of barbecue), there are many fine spots to sample some of the best barbecue in the country.

In addition to the list above, you could explore the American Tobacco Campus or catch a performance at the award-winning Durham Center for the Performing Arts. The holidays are almost upon us, and that means quality time with friends and family. If you’re expecting visitors, make sure to show them the best the Triangle has to offer.
