Finding the right neighborhood is probably the biggest job anyone who is new to an area faces. It’s also the one thing that will make your new move to Durham, NC a huge Success. In the past 20 years, I’ve helped hundreds of families find the “best” neighborhood for them - based primarily on factors that are important to their situation.

Be sure to put together a list of features you are looking for. I’ve had customers who needed:

  • to be near the airport
  • near a horse farm
  • near a certain school
  • near baseball or soccer fields
  • a neighborhood with a pool
  • a neighborhood with no Homeowner dues

The list is endless - and we’ve been able to find the right neighborhood each time!

Here are some methods for finding the right place for you. Finding a neighborhood is like assembling a mosaic: each small tile you place will help you see the big picture more clearly.

Online “Newspapers” about the area and local resources like these are great places to learn more about the Durham area.

Other ways to find out if this is the Best Neighborhood would be:

Check Out the Neighborhood and the Community from All Angles
Stop by areas near the neighborhood on different days and different times. You may not see all of the children playing on a school day - but on the weekend, you’ll see more activity. Maybe the street seems noisy and trafficked on weekends, or traffic is awful between 7:30 and 8:00 during the morning commute.

Visit Schools, Libraries and Playgrounds
Don't rule out a school based on rumors or scores. Orange County Public Schools offers so many options - We can work it out for you to tour schools in an the neighborhood you love. Do the children and staff seem engaged and happy? We also have great libraries in Chapel Hill. I would encourage you to stop by the public library and the local playgrounds -- see who uses them and what programs they offer.

Check out Reviews
We have a very active group of people in Durham who leave honest reviews of daycares, youth programs, entertainment venues, traffic and restaurants. I would encourage you to read reviews and recommendations for that area.. You might also want to visit the closest YMCA, Sr. Center, or Art Center..

Each place you visit will help you figure out your picture of a neighborhood. And once you've figured out some areas that will make you happy, it's time for me to help you find that perfect house!
