About Durham Bulls Athletic Park - History

In the Triangle area, the saying "Take me out to the ball game" refers to The Durham Bulls Athletic Park (DBAP). The DBAP is home to the Durham Bulls, the AAA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays Baseball League. It is also home to the Duke Blue Devils baseball team. The 10,000-seat park opened in 1995, just a mile down the street from its former ballpark.

The Storied Past Of DBAP

Prior to 1995, the Bulls played at the old Durham Athletic Park. The old park still exists, hosting concerts, beer festivals, summer leagues, farmers’ markets, and other special events. It also hosts the North Carolina Central University’s men’s baseball team.

Located in downtown Durham, the DBAP is a brick structure that is reminiscent of old-time ball parks in its look and feel. The Blue Monster, a 32-foot-high wall in left field, contains an old-fashioned manual scoreboard. Above the Blue Monster sits the Snorting Bull, officially known as Wool E. Bull, which was modeled after the bull used in the movie Bull Durham. If a batter hits a ball over the Blue Monster or the Bulls score a homerun, the bull will respond by blowing smoke through its nostrils.

Upgraded Amenities Elevate Guest Experience

While the building is old fashioned, the amenities are not. A roof covers 2,500 seats, from behind home plate to the areas behind the dugouts down the first and third base lines. Each seat in the park is extra wide and has extra legroom. Almost all have cup holders. Every seat is designed to give fans a great view of the action on the field. And the park is not without technology. Above the manual scoreboard is a modern video board that displays player stats and line-ups. And a pitch speed display hangs off the Blue Monster.

In 2013, DPAB improved the facilities at the park. They replaced the seats, added additional group picnic areas, and improved the sound system and video displays. They also added Jackie’s Landing, a large social space with numerous food kiosks. Now fans can go get food and not miss any of the game.

At that same time, the park also added the PNC Triangle Club, a 5,000 square-foot facility that is only available to premium ticket holders. Members receive premium seating behind home plate, a private bar, and an upscale dining experience. The club, which has its own kitchen, can also be used for special events during the off season.

Games & Activities For Kids & Parents In Durham Bulls Athletic Park

This year, the park added Playground 42 on Jackie’s Landing. Fans can play shuffleboard, putt on a putting green, and more in an open air environment.

Kids, too, have their own space. Kids can play in Wool E. World, a playground for children with inflatables, slides, and interactive games. It’s free for kids under age 5. Wool E. World also offers you the chance to test your pitching speed, or play wiffle ball or basketball.

The Future Of Durham Bulls Athletic Park

In 2013, the Durham Bulls signed a 20-year lease extension, committing them to the park through 2033. The team contributed some of the funds to cover the recent renovations of the facilities.

Last fall, the Duke baseball team renewed its agreement with the Durham Bulls to play at DBAP for the next seven years, starting this year. The agreement also includes a permanent Duke locker room and a clubhouse at the facility.
