Downtown Durham is constantly upgrading it's offering. This month the newest investment from the City of Durham, and local Entrepreneur's bring upgrades to the Award Winning DPAC facility and Downtown Durham's American Tobacco District.

DPAC announced plans to expand the President's Circle Lounge in partnership with Capitol Broadcasting Co. The expansion will more than triple the amount of space for the top supporters of DPAC and will expand other facilities as well.

In addition to the announced upgrades for the President's Lounge, work is almost finished for the four new restaurants in the space directly next to DPAC. For the last year, construction of Diamond View III (which is located just outside the left outfield wall of the Durham Bulls Athletic Park) has been anxiously awaited because Durham is getting it's OWN VERSION of The Pit.

"Renowned in BBQ circles, Ed Mitchell’s new bar-b-que joint ‘Que will be among the first to open and will feature both indoor and outdoor seating." You will find us in line when that opens!

Starwood Hotels premier brand of Hotels, Aloft is also expanding it's presence and will begin building next to DPAC in the Fall of 2013. The hotel plans to open in May of 2015. The Aloft Hotel in Downtown Durham's American Tobacco area will offer "134 spacious, loft-like rooms, tech-forward innovation" when it opens.

The hotel will make it even easier for those who want to enjoy the expanded restaurant offerings, downtown festivals, shows at DPAC and, of course, Durham Baseball found in the American Tobacco Historic District. More than 25% of the folks who attend shows at DPAC come from out of town, and while I doubt most of them will need a room (I mean some of them are coming from Chapel Hill and Cary, after all) I think it's a great plan for Durham.

In addition to the Aloft chain, the Durham City Officials have also approved hotel space for a Contemporary Art Museum, restaurant and 125 bed luxury hotel in the former Suntrust Tower. The project, scheduled to also open in 2015, will redesign the space originally done by the firm the designed the Empire State Building. This is also close to the American Tobacco Trail expansions due in Downtown Durham in the next couple of years.

With all of these expanded facilities for eating and entertainment - you would hope that some developers would be working on some new Condo Units available for downtown Durham. In researching downtown Durham NC Condominium projects already approved, under construction - I found 2 units available with one project, one unit with another - 8 in one building. There's only a proposal for one large scale condo project in Downtown Durham, and that one is at 300 West Morgan Street. A similar project, originally planned at Crabrtree Valley Mall never made it off the drawing boards, but there's hope that we will have more Condo options in Downtown Durham soon!
