There have been some moments this year, that Realtors have not been proud to show. Barbicore is one that is truly an acquired taste, and as we begin to close out 2023, we look forward to new trends that make our jobs, just a bit easier. Here is a pop quiz style list compiled from designer insights and consumer feedback, and what trends will last into 2024 and what trends will stay behind in 2023.

1. All-white Bathrooms, In or out?

Out! According to a survey by Fixr.com, over a quarter of interior designers are ready to bid farewell to all-white bathrooms. A shift is being made towards more vibrant shower tiles and jewel tones.

2. Patios to the Max, In or out?

In! With contingencies. Homeowners have been maximizing their outdoor spaces with plants, firepits, yard games, and more, and that is great. However, it can get cluttered. Designers recommend retreating from too much stuff and allowing nature to shine as the main outdoor focal point.

3. Black Stainless Steel Appliances, In or Out?

Out! Like many things that are all black, they have realistically fallen short of expectations. They show wear more easily and are reportedly peeling and cracking. Traditional silver stainless steel will remain.

4. Boucle Fabrics

Out! Boucle fabrics which have been appearing in a number of designer spotlights are on their way out and we hope not to see them again for some time. They show wear, retain dirt and fragrance, and are a poor choice for actual use.

5. Zellige Tiles

Out! Zellige tiles are known for their imperfections, which is in the same vein as more organic looking materials, however, like many trends, in practice, they can appear messy and uneven.

6. High Backsplashes

In! One issue we have found with low backsplashes is that they have less protection for walls and as a result can appear messy after years of cooking, whereas a high backsplash is a statement.

7. Dining Benches

Out! While they may save space, these are really not a great option for optimal enjoyment in a dedicated dining room. We also vote that the benches remain at picnic tables.

8. Clean lines, In or out?

In! The rounded shapeless furnishings in decor are moving out, and making way once again for clean lines. This is not to say we won't see rounded corners and mid-century modern silhouettes, but in furnishings they never brought much to a room.

With over 50 years of collective experience in real estate, we have seen some trends, that are certainly not worth repeating. What have you cringed at this year? We love to hear it! If you are thinking about buying or selling in the Research Triangle Park area, contact My NC Homes.
