3 best day trips in North Carolina

Now that the children are out of school, it is time to find new and interesting ways to entertain them. Here are three day-trips that are must-do in North Carolina. The State provides many activities that are perfect for the whole family. Being centrally located, the Triangle provides an ideal location to explore everything that North Carolina has to offer.

Explore the Mountains at Great Smoky Mountain Railroad

Located approximately 5 hours from the Triangle in the beautiful North Carolina mountains is the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad.

Known for its astounding views and outstanding food, the experience is one-of-a-kind. While riding miles of railroad surrounded by mountains, passengers will be able to view the hundreds of different trees and infinite wildflowers. The natural views are breathtaking promising an unforgettable experience for all.

If you are someone who wants to explore the outdoors, the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad provides rafting and ziplining in packages which includes both the view and adventure. Both experiences are great for families and with museums at shops within 15 miles, this day trip is sure to be an exciting one for all.

Have an Excursion at the North Carolina Zoo

Nestled in the heart of the Piedmont is the North Carolina Zoo. It is roughly an hour and a half drive from the Triangle and is a great day-trip for the whole family.

The North Carolina Zoo is home to thousands of animals ranging from the arctic Polar Bears to the slithering snakes from the desert. With paved walkways, the Zoo is perfect for families with strollers and allows others the necessary environment needed to relax and enjoy the experience.

Showcasing animals from two continents: North America and Africa, the Zoo has entertainment for hours, but the fun doesn’t stop there. There are attractions within the zoo such as the tram and new promotional adventures like a ropes course to keep everyone having fun. The Zoo is a perfect-day trip that will entertain the whole family.

Take a Dive into Beaufort & its Surrounding Area

Beaufort is a historical town located about 3 hours from the Triangle. With a waterfront view and history around every corner, Beaufort is a town that has it all.

Start with the North Carolina Maritime Museum which has an exhibit about Blackbeard and the excavation of Queen Anne’s Revenge. The museum even has a scavenger hunt which is perfect to keep the kids engaged. After touring the museum, there are many local shops and restaurants that are perfect for a middle of the day break. A few of my favorites are: the Dock House, Finz Grill & Bar, and The Fudge Factory.

Directly across the street from the Maritime Museum is the marina at Beaufort. There are ferries that will take your family to either Cape Lookout or Shackleford Banks. Shackleford Banks is known for its majestic wild horses. It is an island that allows for a relaxing afternoon while getting an up-close look at animals that have thrivedfor hundreds of years without humans.

Cape Lookout features one of North Carolina’s iconic lighthouses. This excursion is a great one for the whole family. From Tuesday to Saturday, there is an opportunity to climb the lighthouse and the view from the top is exquisite.

If your family wants to stay away from the outdoors and weather, there is always the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knolls Shore located about 15 minutes from Beaufort. It is home to many favorites like sharks and clown fish, as well as sea turtles and octopi, making it perfect for an afternoon detour.

The list above offers just a few of the things that you can do in North Carolina. Traveling long distances is not necessary when living in the Triangle. There are many places just around the corner that provide fun experiences for the whole family.
