About Maple View Farms in Hillsborough, NC

Maple View Farm is a dairy farm in Hillsborough, North Carolina. The farm originated in Maine in the 1800’s and moved to North Carolina in 1963. About 400 acres are devoted to farming and dairy operations. The farm raises its own Holstein dairy cows and sells some as breeding stock. The farm has developed its own brand of Holstein called Maview. Any registered Holstein in the world with that brand was bred on Maple View Farm.

The farm also grows barley and corn which it uses as feed for the herd in addition to the farm grass. The grains increase the protein content of the milk. There are four holding ponds on the farm to store water for irrigation. These holding ponds have enabled the farm to continue operations in times of drought. The farm also recycles the cow waste, using it as fertilizer on the land.

Maple View Farms: A Major Local Dairy Producer

Maple View Farm produces milk, butter, and ice cream for local distribution. Many stores in North Carolina carry its products. All products are free of hormones and antibiotics. Where possible, they use locally sourced fruits and nuts to flavor their ice cream. Of course, their maple flavorings come from Maine, where they first started their company. To improve profits, the farm installed its own bottling operation in 1996. The milk is distributed in returnable glass bottles.

If you are looking for something cold and sweet this summer, check out the Maple View Country Store which is located across the street from the farm. You can sit in a rocking chair on the veranda, enjoy a generous serving of delicious ice cream, and admire the beautiful view of the farm. At any given time, there are over 20 different flavors available. 12 of the flavors are permanent; the rest are seasonal. In 2012, the store added its own frozen yogurt line.

The country store is very popular in the summer, especially on weekends. The line to get ice cream can be quite long, but trust me it’s worth it. In addition to Maple View Farm ice cream, the country store also sells local cheeses, eggs, fudge, old fashioned candies, and North Carolina pecans.

How The Dairy Producer Switched To Solar Energy

In 2010, Duke Energy leased some land at the farm for a solar project. An array of 286 solar panels sits beside a pasture on the farm. The panels turn sunlight into electricity and feed it into a nearby transformer. The solar field can produce 180 kilowatts per day, enough to power the farm and 235 homes in the area. This project is a collaboration between Duke Energy and Maple View Agricultural Center. Bob Nutter, owner of Maple View Farm, is also involved with the agricultural center.

This solar project in one of several in the state conducted by Duke Energy in response to North Carolina legislation requiring renewable energy to be at least 12.5% of their production by 2021. Maple View Farm is pleased to have added this innovation to their facility.

Maple Hill Farms is just one of the many great local producers this area has to offer. To learn more about homes for sale in Hillsborough and living in the Triangle Area, the My NC Homes team would love to tell you all about it. Send them a message or give them a call at 919.659.5173.
