Durham's Storied Past

Durham has changed a lot over the years. It began as Indian farmland and was settled by Europeans in the mid-1700s. Between the Revolutionary War and the War Between the States, large plantations were established in the area. After the Civil War, the Durham area grew quickly due to its tobacco and textile industries. In the 1950s and 1960s, Research Triangle Park was developed, and has now grown to over 170 major research and development companies. As the tobacco and textile industries declined, medicine, health, and research industries have grown to prominence. Durham is now known as the City of Medicine because nearly one in four Durham workers is employed in the healthcare industry.
