In the middle of summerin The Triangle, it can get quite hot. Luckily, the mountains are just around the corner. Last week, we explored nearby beaches and this week we are seeking higher ground in the mountains of North Carolina. Here are some of our top Mountain Getaways to Enjoy!

Asheville

Asheville is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is a hub for the arts, craft industries, and music in the area. You have amazing dining, great shopping, bohemian arts events, and lots of great music. The downtown is wonderful with independent shops, restaurants, bars and music venues. Lots of yoga studios, spas and pottery studios stud the streets as well.

Just outside of town is also the esteemed Vanderbilt Estate, the Biltmore. The Biltmore draws 1.7 million visitors each year to its amazing gardens, textiles, artwork and ceramics. Be sure to book ahead. This has become a national destination of the arts and we are fortunate to have Asheville so close by!

Hendersonville

Hendersonville is just south of Asheville and is home to boutiques, restaurants, and stores with a special Mineral and Lapidary museum with fossils, crystals, meteorites and rocks. It also offers the angel statue Thomas Wolfe mentioned in his first novel, Look Homeward, Angel.

The Highlands

The Highlands offer incredible waterfalls, over 200 hiking trails, and is one of the oldest summer communities in North Carolina. With only around 1,000 year-round residents it offers a very small town feel, with a rich history. Be sure to see some of its incredible boutiques and the 200-year-old covered bridge to The Bascom arts center. This is a wealthy enclave that celebrates all that is distinctly North Carolina Appalachian Mountains. Before you go, check out the calendar since the downtown has great events!

Boone and Blowing Rock

Boone and Blowing Rock are the home to Appalachian State University, and it has young and outdoorsy vibe that attracts lots of locals tourists. From rafting on the New or Watauga rivers, to gem hunting at Foggy Mountain Gem Mine, and of course hiking one of the area trails, there are such a wide variety of outdoor activities at Boone and Blowing Rock. One of the high points, (pun intended) is the High Gravity Adventures with platforms created by a team that included a pro from Animal Planet's Treehouse Masters offering zip lines with hidden gnomes. This is a great mountain getaway for families looking for adventure.

Black Mountain

Black Mountain is located in Buncombe County and it offers the picturesque Lake Tomahawk Park. Stroll on the shores, fish off the pier, swim in the pool, or play a match of tennis this is a great spot for getting outside. This is also a great trail and hike during fall on the Greybeard Trail.

There so much of North Carolina to explore and enjoy. We hope you are able to enjoy some of these mountain towns this summer, or this fall!
