Did you know that some of the most iconic films of the 20th and 21st century were filmed in North Carolina? The film industry is not one that most of us consider an economic driver in North Carolina, but in fact North Carolina has a long well established film industry, accumulating over 6 billion in revenue. Here are a list of some of our favorites filmed right here in North Carolina. We would love to hear some of yours. Now, "Quiet on the set and.... Action"
Dirty Dancing (1987)
While the plot takes place in upstate New York, this was shot in Western North Carolina at Lake Lure and in Virginia. Unfortunately, the scene where Patrick Swayze lifts Jennifer Gray in the water was shot in Virginia, but all of the camp scenes are North Carolina.
Last of the Mohicans (1992)
Last of the Mohicans is a period piece where three Indian trappers were charged with protecting the daughter of a French Colonel. This epic movie was shot in various locations in North Carolina including Chimney Rock State Park, Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Biltmore Estate.
The Fugitive (1993)
The Fugitive, starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones, is the story of a doctor charged with a crime he didn't commit and is a quintessential action blockbuster. Parts of this film cost upwards of a million to scene and North Carolina was the beneficiary. Keep your eye out for Jackson County in the Smokey Mountains, Bryson City, Blount County, and Dillsboro.
Empire Records (1995)
Unlike The Fugitive, Empire Records was not a blockbuster, but its’ soundtrack and cast have made this film a cult classic. Empire Records was filmed chiefly in Wilmington, NC and you can still see the building set, Rebellion.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
Another cult classic that millennials may or may not remember was I Know What You Did Last Summer. This is a horror film predicated on the revenge for an accidental death the year prior and the lives, and demises, of the group of friends associated with the death. This was shot in various locations including here in The Triangle, so keep your eye out for Schoolhouse Beach, Portuguese Beach, the American Fish Company, the Fishy Fishy Cafe, the Fort Ross Store, the Historic Amuzu Theatre, and Duke University.
Patch Adams (1998)
This tear jerker starring Robin Williams was shot in The Biltmore Estate, town of Asheville, Chapel Hill, and the University of North Carolina and is the story of how a doctor with mental illness heals his patients using humor.
Shallow Hal (2003)
Starring Gwenyth Paltrow and Jack Black, this comedy slash romantic comedy that tells the story of a shallow womanizer who is transformed to only see a persons inner beauty was shot in various locations around Charlotte. Some you may recognize include JPS Funds where Hal worked, an old Fuel Pizza location on North Tryon Street where Rosemary and Hal had their first date.
Hunger Games (2013)
Another blockbuster shot in North Carolina, this post apocalyptic adventure based on the books by Suzanne Collins, starring Jennifer Lawrence were shot in Pisgah National Forest and various areas of Charlotte. When Jennifer Lawrence is announced and on fire, this took place in the Charlotte Convention Center.
