What to do with your dog during showings

For dog owners, selling a home can be a challenge, especially when it comes to finding a place for your furry companion to stay during showings.

Buyers don’t want to view homes with dog(s) around, so owners will typically turn to friends and neighbors to watch their pets during showings and open houses. But sometimes that’s simply not an option.

Luckily, there are some options in the Triangle for pet owners to get their pets out of the house for an hour or an afternoon.

Dog-Friendly Parks in the Triangle

When the weather is nice, a great option is to take your dog to the park. There are plenty of dog-friendly parks in the area. Here are some parks that are welcome to dogs:

  • Homestead Park, Chapel Hill - This park features a quarter-acre fenced-in area where you can let your dog run off-leash with other dogs. There is also a skate park, sports fields and picnic areas.
  • Piney Wood Park, Durham - A dog friendly park with tons of amenities for the rest of the family, this park has picnic tables, a playground, and recreational baseball fields.
  • Carolina Pines Dog Park, Raleigh - With a 4.5 star rating, this dog park is one of the most spacious in the Triangle and provides many amenities for owners as well.
  • William B. Umstead State Park, Cary - This 5,600 acre park which is located between Cary and Raleigh and provides scenic nature trails that are extremely dog friendly. You can spend hours exploring the numerous trails with your pup while you have your open house.
  • Northgate Dog Park, Durham - A small yet convenient dog park with two gated sections for small dogs and big dogs.

Dog-Friendly Restaurants in Durham, Raleigh, & Chapel Hill

Sometimes you want to get a bite to eat during your showings. If you have your dog with you, it limits your options, but there are several establishments in the Triangle that have outdoor seating and allow dogs.

Here are a few restaurants that allow dogs on their patios:

  • Parker and Otis, Durham - A great place for your puppy and you to eat some brunch or breakfast with the family.
  • The Flying Biscuit Cafe, Raleigh - Located in Cameron Village, this local favorite serves up southern staples on their large dog-friendly patio.
  • Spotted Dog Restaurant & Bar, Carrboro - Locally owned and operated, this restaurant focuses on vegetarian and healthy food, and even has “dog” in their name, so you know they welcome canine diners.
  • Dead Mule Club, Chapel Hill - With a large patio and a selection of local beers and cocktails that’s just as large, it’s the perfect place to kill some time during showings.

No matter where you take your dog during showings, remember to be courteous to other people and dogs. Keep your dog on a leash (unless it’s an off-leash park) and, of course, pick up after your pets.
