Best Dog Home

Is your dog a beloved family member? I know our dog Hank (pictured below) is. Most people love their pets as much as a family member, and they continually shower their dogs with love and affection. Now, many homeowners are going all out and altering their homes to meet the needs and perceived desires of their dogs. Talk about a dog's life!

HankSo how are people modifying their homes to cater to the needs of their dogs? You might be surprised. Some are building dog rooms in their homes. They use an extra bedroom, den, or bonus room and outfit it to make their beloved pet feel like a king. They equip the room with a nice dog bed, comfortable dog-size furniture, a dressing table, dog toys, a feeding station, and often a dog shower and grooming station. Sometimes they provide heated floors and window seats to keep their pup warm. Often, the décor of these pet rooms is designed to coordinate with the rest of the house, complete with custom cabinetry and even chandeliers.

One pet owner had a special tunnel doggie door created that had two inches of water the dog walked through and then chamois to dry the paws, so that the dog did not track in dirt from outside. Another homeowner put custom windows into the house’s doors at dog height so that their dog could see what was going on outside their room or outside the house. Another dog owner created a feeding station that had bowl inserts on a low shelf attached to a wall. The house was also plumbed so that there was a faucet just above the water bowl, making it easy to keep the water bowl filled. The list of dog accommodations is almost endless. Some dog owners have spent more than $50,000 renovating their homes for their pets.

Fortunately for most of us, you don’t have to spend that much money to create your own dog room or space. There are a number of things you can do to make your pet feel special.

Pawsitively Great Spaces In The Home For Your Pet

Converted Mud RoomConsider using your laundry room as a dog room. Some dog owners have altered their laundry room by switching to a stackable washer and dryer and using the extra space for a dog shower. You can also use a lower cabinet as a dog bed by removing the door and placing bedding inside.

If you already have a mud room, consider adapting part of it for your dog. Give him a home in a lower cabinet. Place a food station in the room. Hang leashes and grooming tools on the wall by the door.

If your dog already has a special area he or she likes to hang out, consider updating that area for your pet’s needs. Add a dog bed, or a cabinet that can hold the dog bed, dog toys, and a feeding station to the area.

Tips For Building The Best Dog Room For Your Four-Legged Friends

Dog Rooms in your Home If you have a spare room, consider creating a special place in that room for your dog. It’s best to remove any wall-to-wall carpeting. Use a hard floor surface instead. You can use rugs to add warmth and comfort, but use inexpensive ones that can be cleaned or thrown out when they get grungy. Use semi-gloss paint on the walls because it’s easier to clean. And use stain resistant fabrics for any bedding or furniture in the room.

To make your dog’s room more pet friendly, do not include any breakable knickknacks or decorations. Also use a tip-free feeding station. One that has two insertable bowls works better than separate dishes that the dogs can push around the room.
