Things to do this 4th of July

This coming weekend we celebrate Independence Day, the day we declared our independence from England. We usually get together with family and friends for a day of fun, parades, barbecues, picnics, concerts, and, of course, fireworks! This year, you can actually catch fireworks on both Sunday and Monday if you plan ahead. Some places are celebrating the holiday on Sunday and others on Monday, the 4th. To help you plan your holiday, we have listed below some of the more popular events for the weekend.

Events for Sunday, July 3:

Fuquay-Varina Independence Day Celebration

South Park, 820 South Main Street, Fuquay-Varina. 6 pm.

This event includes free music, inflatable rides, tons of food vendors, and spectacular fireworks after dark. A concert featuring Spare Change begins at 6:30. Bring a blanket or chair and money for the food trucks. Coolers are allowed. Alcohol and pets are not allowed.

Wake Forest Fourth of July Celebration

Wake Forest High School, 420 West Stadium Drive, Wake Forest

Fireworks take the center stage at the Wake Forest two-day celebration. Gates open at 5:30 pm. Tickets cost $5 and can be purchased online. See below for events on July 4.

Morrisville Independence Day Celebration

Morrisville Community Park, 1520 Morrisville Parkway, Morrisville

Activities and music start at 6 pm., along with the food trucks. The fireworks begin after dark. Everything is free except for the food trucks. Tents are allowed in the tent area, space permitting.

Independence Day Celebration at Lake Benson Park

Lake Benson Park, 921 Buffaloe Rd., Garner

Enjoy an evening of good music and fireworks at this free event. Gates open at 5 pm. The Carolina Soul Band will play at 5:30 and 6:50. The North Carolina Symphony will play at 8:30, followed by spectacular fireworks. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets, beverages, and food. Or enjoy some food at concessions provided by local non-profit organizations. The event is free. No tickets required.

Independence Eve Celebration

Cary Arts Center, Cary

The pre-show starts at 6:30 with Applause! Cary Youth Theatre. At 7:30, the Cary Town Band and other groups salute the American flag and the country with patriotic musical works.

Events for Monday, July 4:

Wake Forest Fourth of July Celebration

Children’s Parade – 10 am. at the intersection of North Main Street and West Juniper Avenue.

Art and Games in the Park – 11 am. Holding Park, 133 W. Owen Ave. and RH Forrest Field, 123 Owen Ave.

Apex's Olde Fashioned 4th of July

Downtown Apex 9 am. – 1 pm.

This celebration centers around kids 12 and under. There will be inflatables, street performers, carnival games, karaoke, and a climbing wall. You can enjoy barbeque, sno-cones, and ice cream. Uncle Sam’s Parade of Wheels, a parade of decorated bikes, tricycles, wagons, and other non-motorized vehicles, begins at noon.

The Works in Raleigh

Downtown Raleigh, Fayetteville Street

Starting at noon, the downtown comes alive with events, including live music, kids’ rides and games, eating contests, aerial performances, and Cirque de Vol street performers. There will also be food vendors, a beer/wine tent, and art vendors. Fireworks will light up the sky above The Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts at about 9:30.

Brier Creek's 9th Annual Independence Day Celebration

Brier Creek Commons, Brier Creek Parkway, Raleigh

This celebration begins at 5 pm. at the Clock Tower Plaza with a host of events and activities, including bounce houses, face painting, contests, and lots of food. The fireworks display starts after dark. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy the show.

Durham Bulls Game and Fireworks

Durham Bulls Athletic Park, 409 Blackwells Street, Durham

Attend the Durham Bulls baseball game against the Norfolk Tides and stay for the fireworks extravaganza. During the seventh inning, anyone can enter the stadium for free to watch the fireworks.

Independence Day Olde Time Celebration

Fred G. Metro Bond Park, Boathouse, Cary

There’s fun for the entire family at the park. Try your hand at the fishing tournament from 8 – 10 am. Decorate your bike, tricycle, stroller, or scooter at 9:30. Ride that decked out vehicle in the parade at 10:30. Then participate in any of the contests – donut eating, watermelon eating, watermelon seed spitting, water balloon toss, and more – that run from 11 – 3 pm.

July 4th Celebration at Koka Booth Amphitheatre

8003 Regency Parkway, Cary

Family fun activities such as eating contests, a Ferris wheel, and a scavenger hunt fill the afternoon starting at 3 pm. Patriotic music will fill the evening, including the Cary Town Band at 5:45 pm. and the NC Symphony at 7:30, both performing on the Koka Booth main stage. The music will be followed by the fabulous fireworks display. Tarps, blankets, and chairs are allowed on the lawn.

July Fourth Celebration at UNC

UNC’s Kenan Memorial Stadium, 104 Stadium Drive, Chapel Hill

The evening starts at 7 pm. with midway games, inflatables, face painting, and a watermelon eating contest. Transit Vocal Band will perform live. Fireworks begin at 9:30 and can only be seen inside the stadium. The event is free, but donations will be accepted at the gates.
