Raleigh-Durham voted best place to liveAsk anyone from the Raleigh-Durham area and they’ll be happy to tell you what they love about living here, but a new survey has just been released that confirms what many living here already know: that the Raleigh-Durham area is one of the best places in the entire nation to live. In fact, it has officially been voted as the 4th Best Place To Live in the U.S., according to U.S. News & World Report.

The rankings take a great number of elements into consideration, including its desirability, value, the job market, overall quality of life, and net migration. Overall, Raleigh-Durham has been awarded 7.5 out of 10, which might sound lower than what you’d expect, but it’s actually quite significant when you consider that Denver took the top spot with a score of 7.8.

So, what is it that makes the Triangle area so great? Here are a few of the reasons mentioned in the study.

Job Market

What helped push the Triangle area ahead of other major cities like San Francisco, California and Washington, DC in the list is its terrific job growth and exceedingly high quality of life. While this is without a doubt one of the most-educated regions in the country, there are also a number of opportunities for students and graduates to apply their skills and further their education without having to find work elsewhere. When compared to the national average, Raleigh-Durham has a lower unemployment rate, and has a slightly higher average salary.

The Quality of Life

Whether it’s checking out the new craft brewery, visiting your favorite restaurant, or just relaxing in a coffee shop, the area has such a terrific assortment of flavors and atmospheres to choose from that the options are endless. Pair that with its friendly residents and the strong sense of community and you’ve got a great city where conversation is always encouraged.

In addition to the friendly, small-town allure, one cannot forget about the breathtaking scenery, preserved greenspaces, and a ubiquitous support for culture and the arts that make the area truly unique for its considerable size.

Mobility

While driving is the preferred method of transportation, many of the communities in the Triangle area are very walkable and served by public transit.

Cost of Living

The cost of living is slightly lower here than the national average, but where home prices have skyrocketed in many areas across the country, Raleigh-Durham has experienced a steady rise over the years. While prices are expected to continue trending upwards, the low property taxes here make owning a home just that more affordable than in other comparable cities. Especially when compared to other research-based cities, this area is especially affordable.

All in all, the Raleigh-Durham area is easily one of the most livable areas in the nation, and it’s not just our opinion, there’s plenty of proof to back it up.
