The Durham Art Walk is a celebration of visual arts and fine crafts held in downtown Durham and features the work of several talented artists in multiple locations. The longest-running outdoor culture and arts festival in North Carolina, Center Fest is also a major art festival on Durham’s calendar.

North Carolina Central University Art Museum features a permanent collection by three major 19th-century African-American artists: Robert S. Duncanson, Henry Ossawa Tanner and Edward M. Bannister.

Durham is also home to the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and the Golden Belt District, a large gallery space surrounded with thriving and inspiring visual art studios.

Durham Performing Arts

If performance art is more your speed, Durham has much to offer. The city is home to several seasonal festivals and venues.

The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival has been around for 20 years, drawing a sizeable crowd due to its hosting of unique and up and coming documentaries. The festival also offers free screenings every third Friday of the month.

The American Dance Festival offers novice and seasoned dancers alike the opportunity to explore the world of dance by partaking in dance shows and lessons. The festival includes many different dance styles and is suitable for all ages.

Durham NC Jazz FestivalsWant to relax with some cool sounds? The Art of Cool Festival includes live jazz performed by up-and-coming artists looking to make their presence known in the music world. It’s a great opportunity to discover new artists and socialize with friends and neighbors and enjoy downtown Durham. 

If live theater piques your interest, Durham offers a world-class venue in the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC). Some 200 performances a year are put on in the DPAC, including spectacular Broadway productions, high-profile concerts, comedy events and family shows.

The Carolina Theatre is located downtown and has been open since 1926. It hosts music, comedy, and film events. For a night out of the house to have some laughs or indulge in some good melodies, this is a place that should be kept on your radar.
