Labor Day Activities in Chapel Hill, NC

Labor Day falls on the first Monday in September and every year this bittersweet holiday marks the unofficial end of the summer. As kids and parents prepare for the start of the school year, they have one last long weekend to take advantage of before it's back to the daily grind of routines. If you're looking for something to do this Labor Day, here are some of the fun, family-friendly events in the Triangle:

Cary

  • If you're planning to BBQ this weekend, why not stock up on some fresh ingredients from one of the 3 markets that run on Saturdays in Cary! Southern Cary has the Waverly Farmers Market in the Promenade area at Waverly Place. Downtown Cary hosts the Downtown Cary Farmers Market on W. Chatham Street. Western Cary has the Western Wake Farmers Market in Carpenter Village.

  •  The boathouse at Bond Park is open for boat rentals on Labor Day. The   first-come-first-serve rental facility is accessible friendly and costs $8   per hour. After you're done boating around, there are shaded trails and   playgrounds to soak in the day.
  •  Cary is known for their shopping centers that host family-friendly   events. On August 31st be sure to check out the Fall Wine Walk for the   Kay Yow Cancer Fund at Waverly Place. The District at Park West Village   in Morrisville hosts a concert series every Friday. If you're looking for   live music, head over for Acoustic Nights in the District.

Chapel Hill

  • Dance into the night at the Southern Village Dance Hour. You can kick off those dancing shoes when it gets dark to to enjoy Movies by Starlite.      Labor Day Music at My NC Homes

  • Take advantage of North Carolina Botanical Garden’s free tours on the first Saturday of each month. The gardens are free to visit.

  • Enjoy a free concert on the Village Green on Sunday, September 2nd. The featured artist is a Grateful Dead cover band, Better Off Dead. The Carolina Inn also hosts a free outdoor concert series called Fridays on the Front Porch that features wine and great music for the whole family.

Durham

  • End your summer days with the All-American tradition with baseball at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Catch a Durham Bulls baseball game Friday through Sunday. Stay for the whole game to catch the fireworks. The Durham Bulls are a Triple-A affiliate team for the Tampa Bay Rays.

  • Durham Central Park is hosting Kids for Change. This family-fun event features music, performing arts, and affordable eats off the areas best Food Trucks. This event is FREE for all.

  • Roll into Bull City in style for the Bull City Rumble. This vintage scooter and motorcycle show. The event is free to attend and $20 to register your bike or scooter. Attendees will have the opportunity to be awed by some of the best bikes in the South, participate in tech workshops, and music.

Pittsboro

  • On Friday, September 2nd, hop over to Circle City; to catch Carolina Brewery’s award-winning, locally made brews and live music by Erica Blinn. You will find more music and festivities on West Salisbury Street at the City Tap starting at 5:00.

  • Fearrington Village offers guests free live music on the porch of The Roost. Enjoy fresh seasonal brews, pizza, and good company under the large shaded oaks. The Roost beer garden hosts these live music events on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

 Raleigh

  • The African American Cultural Festival is a favorite for many locals. This annual festival celebrates African American Culture through art, music, food, and community. For seven years, this festival has connected local, regional, and national families and businesses to celebrate African American culture in Raleigh.

  • Out of town for Labor Day? Don't worry, there are still events to continue the party when you return! Raleigh hosts one of the country,s best music festivals, Hopscotch starting September 6th.
